Thanksgiving

The sun is setting over Lower Manhattan.
This is a view taken from Brooklyn.
One of the few "Long "weekends in the States is Thanksgiving WE.
The day of Thanksgiving is always the last Thursday of November.
Families do get together on that day to share a big festive meal,
which means a lot of things to do and enjoy with everybody around!!!

Le soleil se couche derriere le bas de Manhattan.
La vue est prise de Brooklyn.
Un des rares longs Weekends, ici aux Etats Unis, est celui de Thanksgiving.
Il tombe toujours le dernier jeudi de Novembre.
Les familles se reunissent ce jour la, pour partager un repas de Fetes,
traditionnellement une dinde rotie,entre autre.
Ce qui veut dire beaucoup de choses a faire et a partager en Famille.

ManhaTTan

One of the nice views of the City,
is from the Staten Island Ferry arriving on Battery Park.
Staten Island is situated at the South of Manhattan.
The ride takes 30minutes and provides views of Manhattan,
Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.
There is a brief moment where as you see here,
you can see The Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building.

Parmi les differents points de vue de Manhattan,
il y en a un que j'aime particulierement: Il vous faut prendre
le Ferry qui part pour l'ile de Staten Island, située au sud de NYCity.
Le trajet dure 1/2h et passe devant Ellis Island et la statue de la Liberté.
Il y a un bref moment ou l'on aperçoit en meme temps,comme ici,
le Chrysler Building ,a droite, et l'Empire State Building.

It may not be Winter yet on the calendar, but it is here !

We start hearing about flurries... snow... wind chill factor..
All that "beautiful" Winter Vocabulary...
"La Frileuse", in French, means a woman susceptible to the cold...

and this bronze statue from the Metropolitan Museum
expresses perfectly what I am feeling..

Le calendrier n'indique peut etre pas encore l'hiver, mais il est arrivé!
On commence a nous parler avec ce charmant vocabulaire hivernal:
bourrasque...frimas...neige..verglas...
Ce bronze d'Houdon qui est au Metropolitan Museum
exprime parfaitement ce que je ressens....

Look up there!

New Yorkers are used to walk on the streets of their city,
and see movies or commercials being filmed.
But this time, it was not "On" but above ,on the rooftop in Soho.
I started taking pictures, and when I stopped, I realized
I had launched a new trend!!
At least 15 people were looking up...some of them taking pictures...

Les New Yorkais sont habitués a voir des films se tourner
dans les rues de leur ville.
Mais cette fois ce n'etait pas "dans" mais "La haut" sur les toits de Soho.
J'ai commencé a prendre des photos et quand je me suis arretée,
je me suis rendue compte que j'avais crée un atroupement..
Il y avait au moins 15 personnes regardant en l'air,
certaines prenant des photos!!!

The Big Apple

As you may know, New York City is known as
"The Big Apple"
There are many stories about the origin , but there is one
I like particularly, even if contested by some..
That's the one I like, that's the One I will tell !!..
It was said that Jazz musicians who finally made it to the City
had a big Apple in their throat before playing in the famous Clubs!...

Comme vous devez le savoir, un des surnoms de Manhattan est:
"The Big Apple"
Il y a plusieurs origines données a ce nom,
mais il y en a une que j'aime particulierement,
meme si elle est parfois contestée, et c'est celle que je vais vous donner:
Il etait raconté que les musiciens de Jazz,
venant jouer pour la 1ere fois a New York, avait la Pomme d'Adam
coincée dans la gorge par le trac, avant leur perfomance
dans les clubs reputés d'Harlem. Et c'est ainsi qu'entre eux
au depart ils l'ont surnommé.

Down the Avenue

Nothing fancy today, just a regular stroll
down Lexington Avenue facing South,
Further down to the left,the tip of the Chrysler building!!

Rien de tres original aujourd'hui, une simple ballade
le long de Lexington Avenue,en descendant vers le Sud de Manhattan
Au loin sur la gauche,la pointe du Chrysler Building.

Look around..turn around

I was admiring another beautiful sunset over the Hudson River,

and turned around to change lenses, when I sighted

the sun and the passerby's shadows playing together on a brick wall..

Sometimes it is worth looking in another direction..

J'admirais un des nombreux superbes couchers de soleil sur la riviere Hudson,
Quand en me retournant pour changer d'objectif sur mon appareil,
j'ai aperçu le jeu d'ombres entre les passants et le soleil sur ce mur de briques
Il est bon parfois de regarder dans une autre direction...

Red and Yellow...Traffic

A wet rush hour in the City, going down Fifth Avenue.
For those of you, who never visited NYC,
when the light on the rooftop of the taxicab is on,
it means it's available..

La chaussée est humide sur la 5eme Avenue...
La circulation est au point mort, c'est l'heure de pointe!!
Pour ceux qui ne sont jamais venus,
quand la lumiere sur le toit du taxi est allumée, cela veut dire qu'il est libre..

What's for dinner...

It is not hard to imagine, that after looking at
the inviting menu of this new restaurant in the East Village,
this guy is sending a message to his friends or girlfriend...
"What's for dinner?..."

Ce n'est pas difficile d'imaginer que ce jeune homme,
mis en appetit a la lecture du menu de ce nouveau restaurant,
envoie un texto a ses amis ou son amie...
"Qu'est-ce qu'on mange??..."

The Guardian

Many of you have noticed the new regulation
forbiding pictures at any exhibition...
Some galleries in NYC are located on the upper floors of buildings.
The Gagosian Gallery on Madison Avenue is one of them.
Going out off the elevator,on my way to their new exhibit,
I could not help but take the picture of the guard..
When I reached him he welcomed me ,saying with a smile:
"NO pictures INSIDE the Gallery"!!!
The exhibit is called :
"Portraits by Alberto Giacometti and Francis Bacon"
If you have a chance until December 13, don't miss it.

Beaucoup d'entre vous ont surement remarqué cette nouvelle
interdiction de prendre des photos dans les expositions..
Dans Manhattan, de nombreuses galeries sont situees à l' etage,
la Gallerie Gagosian sur Madison Avenue est au 4, 5, et 6 eme etages.
En sortant de l'ascenseur, je n'ai pu resister a prendre
le guarde qui attendait a l'entrée.
Quand je suis arrivée a son niveau, il m'a accueillie avec un petit sourire:
"PAS de photos , DANS la Galerie"!!!
Si vous etes a NY avant le 13 decembre, cette exposition regroupe
des oeuvres de Giacometti et Bacon, dont un certain nombre
ont ete inspire par la meme muse , Isabel Rawsthorne.

A Simple ray...

When I came down to the kitchen yesterday morning,
After a short and eventful night...
a simple ray of sun illuminated my counter ...
The simple pleasures of a sunny morning... before the rain set in.
I may have spent a lot of time in front of the TV set..
but my kitchen counters are "sparkling clean"..
hence the reflection!!!

Quand je suis descendue hier matin,
apres une nuit courte et pleine d'evenements..
un simple rayon de soleil illuminait le comptoir de la cuisine
Petit plaisir simple d'un matin ensoleillé avant l'arrivee de la pluie.
J'ai peut etre passe un peu "trop" de temps devant l'ecran..
Mais mon comptoir est "Nickel"pour permettre cet effet miroir!!!

"Infinite Light"

Tonight is going to be a long night listening and watching for the results..
And tomorrow , we will feel like this neon light!!!
La soirée risque d'etre longue devant les ecrans
et demain, nous serons nombreux a nous prendre pour ce néon!!!

An exhibtion on the theme of "The Night"
at Hunter College regroups different contemporary artworks.
This neon light,mounted on the pedestrian bridge
is by a French artist Laurent Grasso.

Une exposition sur le theme de "La nuit"
a lieu a Hunter College et regrouppe diverses oeuvres contemporaines.
Cette lumiere néon montée sur une des passerelles reliant deux parties
de l'université au dessus de Lexington Avenue est l'oeuvre
d'un artiste Français Laurent Grasso.

Yellow & Blue... s (2)

On Sunday, March 19th 2006,
the third anniversary of the start of the war in Irak,
the congregation and friends of The Marble Collegiate Church
hung these ribbons on the iron fence surrounding the property.
On each yellow ribbon was attached the name, rank, and age

of each US soldier who had died so far.
Each blue ribbon was a prayer for the 30,000 Iraqi citizens
who had so far been decimated by this war,
while each green ribbon was a prayer for peace.
Today November 4th 2008, many more ribbons have been
and are still added ... but let's hope for an upcoming END.

Le dimanche 19 mars 2006,
la congregation de cette eglise située a l'angle de la 5emeAvenue & 29th st.
a accroché ces rubans sur la barriere entourant l'eglise.
Sur chaque ruban jaune etait attaché le nom,le grade et l'age
de chaque soldat US tué jusqu'alors.
Chaque ruban bleu correspondait a une priere
pour les 30 000 citoyens Iraquiens tués a l'epoque.
Les rubans verts ,eux ,etaient une priere pour une paix prochaine.

Aujourd'hui, 4 novembre 2008, de nombreux rubbans ont été ,

et continuent d'etre accrochés... Mais il faut esperer que la fin approche..

BOOKS can be fun... Pick one.. Read one
A Saturday morning, in a Manhattan Park,
This little girl is completely absorbed
by the book she just picked up on the shelves,
while her parents are reading their newspapers
on another table. She was reading aloud to herself,
and no Taxi honking..no Fire engines sirens,
not even my camera's closing shutter,
could disturb her!!!

Lire est un delicieux passe temps..
Choisissez un livre.. Lisez le..
Un Samedi matin d'automne,dans un Parc de Manhattan,
Cette petite fille est completement absorbée
par le livre qu'elle vient de choisir sur les etageres,
pendant que ses parents, à une autre table, lisent leurs quotidiens.
Elle lisait a haute voix, gestes a l'appui,
et ni les klaxons des Taxis, ni les sirenes des pompiers,
ni meme le bruit de mon appareil photo, ne lui ont fait lever la tete!!!
