Another common sight on the NY streets are the Newsstands,
Where you can find anything from your daily newspaper,magazines,
ALL kinds of candies,over the counter medicines and tobacco...

Une autre chose courante sur les trottoirs de New York City
sont les stands de journaux,ouverts tot le matin et tard dans la nuit pour certains.
On y trouve de tout,du journal quotidien, aux magazines,
Toutes sortes de petits bonbons
quelques medicaments courants et parfois du tabac.

as the Yellow cabs..
But I found this one pretty daring!!!
Or may be,he is just very concerned with our health and
that's why he put his cart ,next to an emergency room entrance...

Les marchands ambulants font partie du paysage NewYorkais,
presque autant que les taxis jaunes...
Mais j'ai trouve que celui-ci avait beaucoup d'humour!!
Ou peut etre est il plus que concerné envers notre santé,
pour s'installer face a l'entrée des urgences d'un hospital...

Winter Sunrise

6h36 Early this morning,I was lucky enough to be awake
and watch the fog disappearing slowly,as the sun was rising

6h36 Ce matin,j'ai eu la chance d'etre reveillee,pour admirer
le brouillard se dissiper lentement pendant que le soleil apparaissait a l'horizon.

No touch up needed,that's exactly how it was when I took the picture
in my snowboots...and my bathrobe!!!
Aucune retouche necessaire,c'est exactement tel que je l'ai pris en sortant dehors
dans mes bottes de neige...et ma robe de chambre!!!

Welcome Greetings

My Mom always told me"Never postponed to tomorrow what you could do in a day".
For years, I always wanted to take a picture of those signs,
that greet newcomers entering the town.When I got to it this afternoon,
I realized the old signs had been replaced by new ones...too bad.

J'ai attendu des annees avant de me decider
a prendre en photo ces pancartes qui accueillent les visiteurs a leur entree dans la ville.
Cet apres midi,je me suis rendue compte que les anciennes

avaient ete remplace par de nouvelles un peu trop "fringantes"..Dommage.Here is a sample of two of them.New Rochelle borders Larchmont on the south side.
It was founded by a group of French Huguenots(Protestants) from La Rochelle,
flying tyrannical Catholics in France.
Voici deux d'entre elles. New Rochelle est une ville mitoyenne au sud de Larchmont.
Elle a ete fonde par une trentaine de familles de Protestants de La Rochelle
fuyant les persecutions des Catholiques Francais.

Water towers

New York City has many landmarks,but these towers should be one of them.
You can easily spot them on the rooftops ,
they are made of wood,10 feet tall and wide
There is approximately 10 000 of them in the city.
They provide the buildings 'population with drinking water.
The water system is made by aqueducts fed by various reservoirs,
that rely mostly on gravity to deliver the water.
By placing them on the roof,buildings are able to increase the water pressure.
Few of them are painted but this one catch my eye!!

La statue de La Liberte,L'empire State Building
sont des symboles connus de New York City.
Mais ces "Water Towers"ou Chateaux d'eau devraient aussi etre synonymes de NY.
Ils sont faciles a reperer sur les toits de la ville,
ils sont en bois et mesurent 10pieds de haut et de large.
Il y en a 10 000 environ.
Ce sont eux qui fournissent la ville en eau potable.L'eau est acheminee des reservoirs par des aqueducs,utilisant en majeure partie le phenomene de gravite.
En placant ces tours sur les toits de la ville,
les immeubles augmentent ainsi la pression de l'eau pour tous les etages.
Peu d'entre eux sont peints, mais celui-ci a capture mon regard!!

I took this picture on the Triborough bridge that runs parallel to
the Hell Gate Bridge, this is a steal arch railroad bridge.
This train is called the Acela Express,it makes the connection between
Washington D.C and Boston,through New York.
By train,plane,car or simply by staying home... Enjoy your Weekend.

Lunar Eclipse

Tonight,the night of wednesday Feb20/21 2008,
was a Total Lunar Eclipse.
It lasted approximately 51 mn,and started in the New York sky at 10.01pm
An eclipse can only take place at full moon.
The moon disk can take on a dramatically colorful appearance of bright orange.
The sun casting the earth's shadow on the moon...
How cool is that!!

Ce soir,dans la nuit de mercredi 20 au jeudi 21 fevrier 2008
a eu lieu une Eclipse Lunaire.Elle a dure environ 51 minutes
et a commence dans le ciel New Yorkais a 22h01.
Une eclipse ne peut avoir lieu qu'en pleine lune.
La lune peut prendre une couleur rouge orange intense.
L'ombre de la terre recouvrant totalement la lune...
Ce n'est pas tous les jours!!

Night and Day

One of the many pleasures of New York City is to "look UP"..
I can still, vividly remember the first time I felt surrounded by all those gigantic monsters,
and the wonderful feeling that came to me.
This is called The Lipstick Building,due to its oval shape. The 2 architects are Philip Johnson and John Burgee.It was finished in 1986 and is made of stainless steel and red granite.
It is located on third Avenue and 53 rd street .

Un des grands plaisirs quand on marche dans la ville de New York,est de le faire..
"Le nez en l'air". Je peux sans aucune difficultee me rappeler la 1ere fois que je me suis sentie entouree de ces monstres geants.. et l'impresion d'emerveillement que j'ai ressenti..

Leaving Rochester,on my way to the highway,I went by this farm...
It was lunchtime, this is a horse country and with the bitter winter ,they all wear coats..
The look in their eyes seemed to implore...
"Are you Sure you are leaving without us??"

En quittant Rochester,avant de rejoindre l'autoroute,je suis passee devant cette ferme..
C'etait l'heure du Casse-croute,il y a beaucoup d'ecuries dans cette region,et vu les hivers rigoureux,tous les chevaux portent des "manteaux"..
Leur regard semblaient m'implorer...
"Etes vous vraiment sure que vous repartez en nous laissant dans ce froid??"

Fresh Water...

Visiting my son in Rochester NY, I decided to take a little "detour".
Venue faire une petite visite a mon fils,etudiant a Rochester dans l'etat de NY,
j'ai decide de faire un petit detour.

L'eau "bouillonante et gelee" des Chutes du Niagara ,vu cote Americain.

I know this is nothing compared to a lot of you,
but today is my 50th post.
Je sais,c'est peu en comparaison avec beaucoup d'entre vous ,

This poor little town house on the West side in Manhattan seems to be crying for help..
"I can't breath between those two giants,I need my Oxygene...."
Gone are the days , when she was surrounded by houses of her size...

Simple pleasures

It started snowing this afternoon,and after a week end of grey sky...
I was in the mood for some colors... something that would tell me:
"Spring is around the corner"...
I went out and bought myself a bunch of daffodils,
and played with the light to imitate the sun...

Il a commence a neiger des le debut de l'apres midi,et apres un week end plutot maussade
J'ai vraiment eu une envie de couleurs.. que quelquechose me rappelle que:
"Le printemps est en route..."
Je suis sortie faire quelques courses et me suis achetee un petit bouquet de jonquilles
puis j'ai joue avec la lumiere pour imiter le soleil..

Magic landing...

When it's very cold at night in NYC,clouds of smoke coming from the underground are much more apparent. When I saw this one,it looked like those statues had just landed
a top the Terminal!!
Grand Central Terminal is one of the two train stations in Manhattan.
(the other one being Pennsylvania Station ou PennStation)
It started working in 1913. This sculpture, can be seen on the south side , on 42nd street. It was originally designed by a French sculptor(Jules Felix Coutan),
then was made by John Donelly in NY.
Mercury,is in the center,Hercules to his right,Minerva on the left.

Quand il fait tres froid la nuit dans Manhattan,les nuages de fumee sortant des bouches souterraines,semblent plus apparents.
Quand j'ai vu celui-ci,j'ai eu l'impression

This is the only blue color we saw this Week end...
"On top of the Rock"(Rockefeller Center).

Lace-like trees and Bridge

The Triborough Bridge connects the three boroughs of New York City:
The bronx, Manhattan and the Queens.
It was a grey day today,but it suits well this bridge structure.

Le Pont Du Triborough relie les trois quartiers de la ville de NewYork:
le Bronx, Manhattan et le Queens.
La "grisaille" d'aujourd'hui se fond avec l'armature du pont.

Frost needles...

Little Italy in the Bronx (2)

What about some quails? or may be Half a goat to cook on the barbecue? Peter the owner of Vincent's Meat market(on the right) will be happy to give you his recipe.
Chez Vincent's meat market, Peter le proprietaire (a droite)peut vous trouver tout ce qu'il est impossible de trouver ailleurs a NewYork.. Sa specialite,surtout au moment de Paques, la chevre a cuire en moitie au barbecue.

I love the dimmed light in this Deli during the "Drying process". In more than a month the ceiling will be empty again... Homemade Sopressatas go very quickly,when they are ready.
So does the fresh mozarella made in the back .
J'aime la lumiere tamisee de ce deli pendant la saison du "sechage".. dans un peu plus d'un mois,toutes ces sopressatas pendues au plafond auront disparu. La mozarella fraiche,elle, est preparee au fond du magasin.

What could be better than a slice of fresh crusty bread to eat that sopressata...
Quoi de mieux qu'une belle tranche de pain frais et croustillant pour deguster ces saucissons!

And to end this little trip,although this is not an Italian specialty,the covered market is one of the only place left where they still make cigars.. in front of you,everyday and allday
with a nice smile.
Et pour terminer cette petite excursion ,bien que ce ne soit pas une specialite Italienne, dans le petit marche couvert,un des derniers endroits,ici, ou l'on fabrique les cigares,tous les jours, toute la journee et avec le sourire...

Little Italy in the Bronx (1)

Let me introduce to you,Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.
This is the place to go,if you need fresh produces,fresh fish,meat or bread,and all
within a few blocks. English here is almost a second language..
Let's start with some fresh pasta. They still make it in the store,this is a family business: Mario and Chris Borgatti,father and son(on the wall,pictures of La Mamma).. You decide the size you want,they cut it in front of you,whether it's Fetuccine,Linguini or Angel hair....

Aujourd'hui une petite visite sur Arthur Avenue.
C'est un petit coin d'Italie dans le Bronx ou l'on trouve tout ce que l'on desire en produits frais. Les restaurateurs New Yorkais viennent s'y aprovisionner.
Je commence evidemment par les pates ,chez Chris et Mario,une petite entreprise familiale (sur le mur du fond des photos de La Mamma). Vous choisissez la forme de vos pates ,
elles sont coupees devant vous.

Under a covered little market,you will find, the fruit and vegetables. Again here,a family business, three brothers,here Joe Boiano under the Italian flag..
During lunch time,this is a very busy place. You can have a quick lunch,ranging from a pizza to some tripes in tomato sauce...
or may be just a wonderful cappuccino
sprinkled with some chocolate... a little pause in my food shopping!

Sous un petit marche couvert,les fruits et legumes. Cette fois encore, trois freres se partagent le negoce,ici Joe sous le drapeau Italien. Ce petit marche est tres couru a l'heure du dejeuner.
IL y en a pour tous les gouts,de la simple pizza,
au petit bol de tripes a la sauce tomate..
ou tout simplement un delicieux cappuccino saupoudre de chocolat...
une petite pause pendant mes courses!

And don't say anything to the Misses working in the shops or at home cooking....
In the little corner of the market The men are having a good time,and eventhough I wanted them to continue playing... they decided to look at my camera!!!

ET ne dites rien a Mesdames,au travail sur les stands ou en cuisine a la maison..
Ces messieurs se sont bien caches dans un coin du marche. Je voulais qu'ils continuent leur jeu mais ils ont prefere prendre la Pause devant mon appareil!!

Small World

This is a "Clin d'oeil"..to the French and Brittany bloggers.
By now,the people who stop by this site on a regular basis, must have guessed that I am from Brittany.. for one the name could be a clue..
You can imagine,what was my surprise,when,eight years ago,on one of my hundred and one..carpooling trip in Larchmont, I passed by this store and saw the sign bearing the name of a town only a few miles from my childhood town.
The next day,I went in... I had spotted French "Petits suisses" in the window!!
The American owners,after a trip in Britanny and a stop in the little harbor of St Goustan in Auray had decided to open a cheese place and name it after a town they had very much enjoyed.
Small World...

Un petit clin d'oeil a ceux qui connaissent ou vivent en Bretagne..
Je pense qu'il n'aura pas ete trop difficile pour ceux qui visitent ce site de realiser que je suis Bretonne...peut etre le prenom aura facilite les choses!!
Qu'elle n'a pas ete ma surprise il y a huit ans,quand lors d'une de mes nombreuses conduites scolaires dans Larchmont,mes yeux ont vu cette vitrine!!
Je devais etre une des premieres clientes le lendemain matin! j'avais eu le temps d'apercevoir des petits suisses dans la vitrine!.. denree extremement Rare sur ce continent....
Les proprietaires,mari et femme,avaient decide lors d'un sejour en France et en Bretagne, d'ouvrir une "cremerie" et de la nommer apres une ville qu'ils avaient particulierement appreciee...
"Le monde est petit"...
